Daughters of percussionist Miguel Anga Díaz (Buena Vista Social Club) and a Venezuela mother, twins Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé Díaz grew up in Paris with one foot (each) in the Yoruba culture that came to Cuba from Africa on the slave ships of the 17th century. Taking the Yoruba word for “twins” as their name, the sisters took up the musical torch of their culture after their father’s death. With Naomi on percussion and Lisa-Kaindé on vocals and piano, the twins were discovered as teens and signed to the prestigious XL Recordings label. They made their presence felt in 2014 with a debut EP, Oya, mixing up modern soul with their enchanting vocals and incantatory harmonies, blending the influences of Jay Electronica, Erykah Badu, Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba. They performed across Europe and the U.S., releasing their debut full-length album in 2015, revealing a wide range of inspirations from James Blake to King Krule.
